Why is Overvoltage Protection Important?

Overvoltage occurs when voltage exceeds the level a component is rated for — from lightning strikes and sudden power-line fluctuations to switching transients and electrostatic discharge. These events happen every day, and left unprotected, they can cause immediate, unrecoverable damage to computers, telecom equipment, surveillance systems and other electric-powered devices — or silently degrade performance over time. Overvoltage protection devices clamp or shunt this excess energy away from the circuit, keeping systems safe and reliable.

TVS Diodes (Transient Voltage Suppressor)

The Transient Voltage Suppressor diode (TVS Diode) protects electronic circuits against transients and overvoltage threats such as EFT (electrically fast transients) and ESD. TVS diodes are silicon avalanche devices valued for fast response time, excellent clamping capability, low capacitance and low leakage current — widely used in home appliances, entertainment devices and telecom equipment. Available in uni-directional and bi-directional configurations across a wide range of package sizes, working voltages and power ratings.

Thyristor Surge Suppressor (TSS)

TSS devices protect telecommunication equipment — modems, line cards, fax machines and other CPE — from surge events on the line. They help equipment meet regulatory requirements including GR-1089, ITU-T K.20/K.21/K.45, IEC 60950, UL 60950 and TIA-968.

ESD Protection Devices

Engineered to protect voltage-sensitive components from electrostatic discharge and other fast transients, TCLAD’s ESD protection devices combine excellent clamping capability with low leakage, low capacitance and fast response time. Their small size and high level of protection make them a flexible solution for HDMI, DisplayPort and MDDI interfaces, and a proven replacement for multilayer varistors (MLVs) in mobile phones, notebooks, tablets, set-top boxes and LCD TVs.

Gas Discharge Tube (GDT)

Gas Discharge Tubes are ceramic tubes filled with noble gases and sealed between two electrodes. When a high-voltage surge occurs, the GDT dissipates the transient by creating a glow discharge path through the tube — protecting the circuit while maintaining high insulation resistance and low capacitance and leakage for minimal impact on normal operation.

Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV)

A varistor is a voltage-dependent resistor — high resistance at normal operating voltage, dropping sharply as voltage rises. TCLAD’s Metal Oxide Varistors shunt the current created by excessive transient voltage away from sensitive components, serving as control, compensation or protection elements across a wide range of circuit designs.
